Himalayan Yoga Yatra

March 21-April 1, 2018
The essence of the mystics permeates these hills,
and if you listen closely and quietly you can hear their wisdom.
A Journey of the Heart
Many years ago, after I was first introduced to Neem Karoli Baba (Maharajji) through Ram Dass and Krishna Das, and I was told that I must go to India. So I did, and I found myself in the Himalayan region known as Deva Bhumi or the Land of the Gods. It is where Ram Dass first met Neem Karoli Baba and where he went through his yogic training in the holy places of that region.

It became deeply meaningful to me to go to the actual places where Ram Dass met and spent time with Maharajji – to experience for myself what I had only heard about in stories. This was a journey into the heart and soul of this land, it’s people and most of all the essence that Ram Dass received through the grace of Maharajji.

Yatra Leaders
Saraswati Markus is the Founder of Nourishing Life Center of Health & Yoga. She is a doctor of Chinese medicine, a leading Women’s health expert, and a Yogini. In the year 2000, hearing the chants of Krishna Das led her to Ram Dass and Maharaji which all continue to be central streams and influences of her work and life.

A practicing yogini for many years, Saraswati always included yoga in her Chinese medical practice. In 2007 she developed Dao Flow Yoga – a self-care yoga practice designed for women. Dao Flow has now evolved into a classical heart-based practice weaving the techniques of movement, sound, & breath, onto consciousness to evoke a multidimensional healing, and transformation Hatha yoga experience.

In 2010 Saraswati became the resident yoga teacher at the twice-yearly retreat in Maui with Ram Dass and Krishna Das. Saraswati has worked in the field of inner growth and alternative medicine for over 23 years. In 2012 she brought Dao Flow out to the world with the release of her 5-disc DVD yoga practice and immersion training programs. Jai Sri Ram.
Julie Devi Hale is a licensed psycho-therapist, yoga teacher, retreat leader and mom based in Pacific Palisades, California. Seeking a path to learn to love better, she began attending Ram Dass retreats on Maui twelve years ago, and has been a committed member of the Satsang ever since. Her service to Ram Dass and the Lover Serve Remember Foundation has grown over the years to include teaching yoga and coordinating the Newcomer Program at the twice-yearly Maui retreats. Devi has been to India on this special journey before, indeed, she received her name of Devi, or ‘mother goddess’ from Siddhi Ma in Kainchi – on Mother’s Day. (Ask her, it’s a good story, she’ll tell you.)

At home, Devi teaches and runs workshops at her neighborhood Goorus Yoga Studio, and leads Shinrin-Roku nature walks in the Santa Monica Mountains. Devi is honored and excited to be included in this first Yoga Yatra Retreat. You can find out more about Julie Devi Hale at
Shyama Chapin has spent many years as a performing songwriter in New England and California. These days she loves most of all to chant the Divine Names and feels lucky and blessed to be able to center her days around this subtle and profound practice.

Shyama leads kirtan in New York City and beyond, has been singing in Krishna Das’ Posse, both on-stage and on his recordings, for many years, and is featured in response vocals on many other friends’ chant recordings as well.

Alongside her kirtan schedule, Shyama teaches harmonium to accompany chant practice to students in the New York metropolitan area. She is also an experienced massage therapist, licensed to practice in New York State. Her CD of original music, Road Songs, produced in 2003 by Bonnie Hayes, is available online. In 2016, she began recording a double CD of chant music Love’s Door, which is scheduled to be released on the Mantrology label in early 2018.
